About Larry Bell

1939–

Larry Bell (b. 1939, Chicago, Illinois) studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles from about 1957 to 1959, where the installation artist Robert Irwin was among his teachers and mentors. A pioneering figure of the Light and Space movement, Bell is best known for glass cube sculptures that use vacuum-deposited metallic coatings to explore reflection, transparency, and the behavior of light on a surface. His work was included in the landmark 1966 exhibition Primary Structures at the Jewish Museum in New York. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1970 and continues to work from studios in Taos, New Mexico, and Venice, California, having expanded his practice in later decades to include vapor drawings on paper, mixed-media collage works, and large-scale public commissions such as Reds and Whites at North Carolina State University (2024) and Improvisations in the Park at Madison Square Park in New York (2025).
