About Connie Fox

1925–2023

Connie Fox (1925–2023) was born in Fowler, Colorado, and earned a BFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1947 before attending the Art Center School in Los Angeles and completing a master’s degree at the University of New Mexico in 1952. An abstract painter whose vocabulary drew on Surrealism and avant-garde film, Fox taught at Carnegie Mellon University, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Long Island University Southampton, and exhibited in Albuquerque, San Francisco, and Manhattan before settling in East Hampton, New York, in 1980, where she lived and worked alongside her husband, sculptor Bill King. Her practice, spanning seven decades, culminated in later series such as Sammy’s Beach (2007–2014). She received a 2013 Purchase Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and her work is held in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Parrish Art Museum, Guild Hall, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Fox died at her home in East Hampton on June 19, 2023, at the age of 98.
