Simone Mantellassi (b. 1971) is a self-taught artist born and raised in Florence, Italy, who moved to the United States in 2002 and now lives and works in Gilbertsville, New York, in the Catskills. His drawings blend comic-book layouts with dreamlike, absurdist imagery, shaped by both 1970s comics and Florentine Renaissance art, and he builds small diorama-style sculptures from everyday materials encased in plexiglass. He is represented by KIPNZ. His work has been shown at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY (2006 and 2008 Everson Biennial), the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY (“In/Beyond Western NY,” 2007), Bullet Space in New York (“Wrong Side of History,” 2016), and KIPNZ in Walton, NY (“I Can Do It Alone When You’re Not Here,” with Zena Gurbo, 2024), and is held in the collection of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.
