Shields’ first one-man show was held at the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York in 1969. Lee Gallery in Dallas.

Shields was born in 1944 in Harrington, Kansas and studied at Kansas State University and the Theater Workshop of the University of Maine. He has been included in many major group exhibitions at the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim, the Museum of Modern Art, Albright-Knox, Reese Palley Gallery, San Francisco, the Corcoran Gallery, University of California, Berkeley, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
