John Cushing Wright (1919- )

Written in 1976 for the catalog and reproduced as printed, with spelling corrected. Not current.

The work of John Cushing Wright draws much from the natural world. Compositions are suggested, according to Wright, from things “animal, vegetable, and mineral: insects, leaves, lunch-counters—momentary profiles, horizons, cloudscapes—human bodies with their complex of concavities—lights at night—fragments and moments.”

Wright exhibits rarely, preferring to work in the isolation of his Inverness studio and showing his work only occasionally. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and studied at the St. Paul School of Art and the Institute of Design in Chicago.

In 1950, he moved to California, where he now lives and works. He had a one-man show at the Lester Gallery in 1975, in Inverness, and he has exhibited at the College of Marin, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Galleria El Zaguan in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. A major exhibition of his work was held at the Minnesota Museum of Art in 1970, and a show of his small works was seen at Verde Valley School in Sedona, Arizona in 1974.
