Included among the distinguished residents of the remote Tomales Bay colony of Inverness. California, are artists, museum designers and scholars of striking and individualistic philosophies. One of these is photographer Andrew Romanoff, represented in the collection by his award-winning print, Inverness, a characteristic view of nearby Drake’s Bay.

Born in London in January 1923 to parents of emigre Russian nobility, Romanoff studied at the Imperial Service College in Windsor before joining the British Navy during World War II. In 1949 he emigrated to the United States and joined the Inverness colony as a resident in 1970.

Romanoff’s interest in photography began in his early youth. Although he is also a painter it is for his rare vision and technique as a photographer and printmaker that he has become best known. His work was shown in 1976 at the Smith-Andersen Gallery in Palo Alto; and previously at the Lester Gallery and Inverness Gallery. His most recent award was given him by the Golden Gate National Recreational Area for a color version of the print in its present collection.
