Jo Baer (1929- )

Written in 1976 for the catalog and reproduced as printed, with spelling corrected. Not current.

Jo Baer’s involvement with biology, physiology, and psychology is a clue to her fascination with the abstract symbology evidenced in her series of screenprints, Cardinations. Born in Seattle, Washington, in 1929, Baer studied biology at the University of Washington before her interest in painting began. She was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Grant in 1969, and that same year taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York. She is now a member of the Graduate Faculty in Physiological Psychology at the New School for Social Research in New York.

Baer has had one-woman shows in New York and Europe. The Whitney Museum exhibited her work in 1975 and she has shown at the Nicholas Wilder Gallery, Los Angeles, and the Galleria Toselli in Milan. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Baltimore Museum; the Guggenheim Museum; Corcoran Gallery; Museum of Modern Art; Art Institute of Chicago; the Yale University Art Gallery; and many others.
