Joe Price (1935- )

Written in 1976 for the catalog and reproduced as printed, with spelling corrected. Not current.

The sudden emotion caused by empty rooms, haunted by memory or by imagined presence, infuses these lithographs of Joe Price like the golden wash of afternoon light that gilds the old wood, the cracked plaster, the homely bible stand. These images recall both those masters of the “persistence of memory,” Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth.

Born in Cajun County, Louisiana, Joe Price studied Theater Arts at Northwestern University and received an MA degree in Graphic Arts at Stanford University in 1970. He has exhibited at Cal Expo, the San Francisco Annual, the San Jose Annual, and in Los Angeles, New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C. His work is in the collections of John Gardner, Herb Caen, Paul McCloskey, Art Buchwald, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Newman.

From The Art Collection of United Gas Pipe Line Company (Houston, 1976), curated by Susan Rush.
