UGPL 0031 Welliver, Neil, Trout 1975, hand colored etching, 26½” x 36,” 1975 illus: p 77

Neil Welliver (1929- )
Written in 1976 for the catalog and reproduced as printed, with spelling corrected. Not current.
The delicate drawing of the etcher’s line and a pale wash of the watercolorist’s brush combine to realize this lyrical work by Neil Welliver, a study of a speckled trout dappled in the sun and shadow of a shallow stream-bed. The water’s surface, eddying and rippling, contrasts with the calm opacity of the warm brown and grey rocks and the trout appears as nature’s work of art, utilizing all of the imagery of its surroundings.
Born in Pennsylvania in 1929, Welliver studied at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art. He received an MFA from Yale in 1955 and later taught at Cooper Union, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania. His first one-man show in 1960, at the Mirsky Gallery, was followed by numerous others in New York (Stable Gallery), New Haven, Swarthmore College, Philadelphia, and Boston. His many inclusions in important group exhibitions have been seen at the Whitney Museum, the American Graphic Society, the Boston Museum, the Jewish Museum, Vassar College, and many others. Collections owning Welliver’s work include Brandeis and New York Universities; Vassar College; Chase Manhattan Bank; Joseph Hirshhorn; Whitney Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Bank of New York; and the American Federation of Art.
