Bill Clutz (1933- )

Written in 1976 for the catalog and reproduced as printed, with spelling corrected. Not current.

A resident of New York City since 1955, Bill Clutz shows in his work anecdotal urban scenes, the tension and electricity of city life.

He was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1933. His many one-man gallery shows began with an exhibition at Bertha Schaefer gallery in the 1960’s; he has shown at many other galleries, including the Triangle Gallery in San Francisco in 1967 and the Brooke Alexander Gallery in New York in 1973. The Museum of Modern Art has frequently shown his work, and he has also been included in the programs of the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida; the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha; and the “Art in Embassies” in Damascus, Syria, 1966. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art; the Guggenheim, Hirshhorn, and Fogg Museums; the Chase Manhattan Bank; and the Bradley Family Foundation, New Orleans.
