Bowman’s study could be an illustration for the famous Saki story of the ghostly hunters returning from the bog—here are three hunters after a day’s rabbit hunting, posing for a triumphant picture in the slanting late-afternoon light with their favorite dog. This charming genre scene, with its texture of rough clothes, the splintering sternness of old barn wood, has the effect of old tintype photographs with their etched luminosity, the nostalgic, lovingly captured moments in memory, as in the three women seen after a picnic, or a day at a county fair.
