Stanley Boxer (1926- )
Written in 1976 for the catalog and reproduced as printed, with spelling corrected. Not current.
Other corporate and private collections that have owned Stanley Boxer’s work include the Chase Manhattan Bank, New York; the Corning Glass Corporation; critic Clement Greenberg; David Rockefeller; painter Jules Olitski; Mr. John Garrow, Houston; and the Inexco Oil Company, Houston. Boxer’s work, which is known as “stain” painting, is among the finest of contemporary abstract art. What seems at first glance to be an unrelieved surface of yellow ochre reveals, after study, a penumbra of rainbow colors in a resonant, almost fugal composition.
Boxer’s distinguished list of one-man exhibitions begins in 1953 with a show at the Perdalma Gallery, New York, and continues through major showings at galleries in New York, Winnipeg, Santa Barbara, San Antonio, Houston, Paris, Zurich, and Hamburg. He has been represented in museum exhibitions at New York University, the Museum of Modern Art exhibition at the American Embassy in Brussels; Brandeis University; Birla Museum, Calcutta, India; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and many others. His work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum, Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Albright-Knox Museum; Cornell University; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Des Moines Art Center.
The artist was born in 1926 in New York City and was educated at Brooklyn College and the Art Students League in New York, where he now lives.
From The Art Collection of United Gas Pipe Line Company (Houston, 1976), curated by Susan Rush.
