After a recent Ned Evans exhibition at the Tortue Gallery in Santa Monica, California, critic Sandy Ballatore of ARTWEEK described his work:

“Evans constructs the works by building up many layers of paper, rhoplex, and cheesecloth upon a plastic-topped rectangular table. Color is brushed, sprayed, rubbed, etc., into each layer, resulting in a textural and multicolored process-product form. After reaching the desired thickness, the piece is cut into smaller rectangles . . . having one ripped edge . . . his jagged edges and rough surfaces work cohesively . . . surfaces having the elusive tenderness of a Japanese landscape or the brash opulence of polished jewels . . .”

The artist is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine. He has exhibited often at the Jack Glenn Gallery and Tortue Gallery in southern California.

Like topographical maps or flags of ancient civilizations, Evans’ work in this collection is an enigmatic example of the effect of texture on color.
