Elaine Lustig Cohen’s distinguished career as a graphic artist began during an association with Alvin Lustig, with whom she shared both a design office and marriage from 1948 until his death in 1955. She married the writer Arthur Cohen in 1956 and has maintained a free-lance design practice, numbering among her clients the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art in Fort Worth, Texas; architect, Philip Johnson; the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D. C.; Eero Saarinen; the Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art; and U.S. Embassies in London and Oslo.

She began serious painting in 1966 and has exhibited widely in New York galleries. In 1975 she was awarded an architectural wall commission for the Bronx State School in New York, for which Richard Meier was the architect.
