Kenneth Price (1935- )
Written in 1976 for the catalog and reproduced as printed, with spelling corrected. Not current.
There is a strange juxtaposition of foreground and distance, past and present, recalling T.S. Eliot’s “. . . ragged claws, scuttling across the floors of silent seas . . .” in these subaqueous images of Kenneth Price. Through the flat white shadows of lily pads or maple leaves we see a bizarre still life, lit by ancient light.
Kenneth Price was born in Los Angeles in 1935 and studied at the Chouinard Art Institute, University of Southern California, and the State University of New York. Price joined the “Ferus Gallery Group” in 1960 for his first one-man show, later had one-man shows at Ferus, the Kasmin Gallery in London; the Mizuno Gallery in Los Angeles; the Whitney Museum of American Art; and Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles. His work has been seen also at the Oakland Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The University of California at Irvine, the Janie C. Lee Gallery in Dallas, the Museum of Modern Art, the Pasadena Art Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum in Eindhoven, Holland.
From The Art Collection of United Gas Pipe Line Company (Houston, 1976), curated by Susan Rush.
