Written in 1976 for the catalog and reproduced as printed, with spelling corrected. Not current.
Born in 1922 in Vietnam, Rene Genis was brought to France by his parents when he was ten years old. He studied at the Ecole des Arts Appliques and the Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, and was graduated in 1950 with honors. He later studied under Maurice Brianchon and in Saint-Cere with the famous weaver and tapestry artist Jean Lurcat.
Although well-known for landscapes, Genis’ most important work is in still life. He won the Grand Prix de la Ville de Cassis in 1959 and the Prix de la Jeune Peinture in 1960. Also known as a book illustrator, Genis has had one-man shows and has been included in many exhibitions in Europe and the United States. His work is in collections in Paris, Djakarta, Oran, Bagnois, Bordeaux, Lyons, and Aix-en-Provence.
Genis’ work was shown at the Hightower Gallery in Oklahoma City and the Knott Gallery in Dallas.
