Robert Arneson
1930–1992
Robert Arneson (1930–1992) was born in Benicia, California, and studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts before earning an MFA at Mills College in 1958 under Antonio Prieto. In 1962 he joined the faculty of the University of California, Davis, where he built the ceramic sculpture program and taught for nearly three decades, emerging as a leading figure of the ceramic Funk movement — an approach that treated clay as a vehicle for humor, autobiography, and pointed social commentary rather than traditional craft. Beginning in the 1970s, self-portraiture became a recurring, decades-long preoccupation in his work, and by the early 1980s his subject matter had turned increasingly political. In 1981, the San Francisco Arts Commission commissioned, and then rejected amid public controversy over inscriptions on its pedestal referencing Mayor George Moscone’s assassination, Arneson’s ceramic bust Portrait of George (Moscone); the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art acquired the sculpture in 2012. His work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and his 1978 ceramic sculpture Elvis has been held by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, since it was donated by the Sydney and Frances Lewis Foundation in 1985.
