Geoff Winningham’s interest in photography began while he was a student at Rice University in the early 1960’s. After he was awarded a BA in English at Rice, he returned to study in the Department of Fine Arts, and edited alumni publications there. He then studied photography, seriously, at the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, under Aaron Siskind, Arthur Siegel and Wynn Bullock and received an MS in photography there in 1968.

After joining the faculty of the Media Center at the University of St. Thomas in Houston in 1968, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Art at Rice University in 1969; Associate Professor in 1973.

Winningham’s publications include Friday Night in the Coliseum (Allison Press, 1971); and Going Texan (Mavis Kelsey, 1972). His work has been catalogued or anthologized by the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, 1974; the Time-Life Photography Year, 1973; Photography Annual, 1968 and 1973; and Vision and Expression (George Eastman House, 1969). Numerous articles and illustrations for national and regional publications include Esquire, Atlantic Monthly, Life, Time, Newsweek, Popular Psychology, Texas Monthly, Sports Illustrated, and The New York Times Magazine. His film, “The Pleasures of This Stately Dome” was produced under a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
