Neda Al-Hilali, from the 1976 catalog

Neda Al-Hilali (1938- )

Written in 1976 for the catalog and reproduced as printed, with spelling corrected. Not current.

Neda Al-Hilali pleats, plaits, and presses paper to form “weavings” of painterly subtlety and depth. Some of the effects of color tonality and textural richness achieved by the artist’s method give a mysterious sense of continual movement, as if one were seeing light dappling a bed of stirring autumn leaves, the rippling surface of water, the live bark of trees.

Born in Bohemia, she now lives in Venice, California. She received her education in fine art in London, Munich, and Baghdad before her arrival in the United States in 1961. She was awarded a degree from the University of California at Los Angeles, and has held teaching positions at a number of colleges. She is presently teaching at both Scripps College and UCLA, conducts workshops, and frequently lectures.

Her work has been exhibited widely, both in the United States and abroad, and includes showings in the Johnson Collection of Contemporary Crafts, Washington; the Tapestry Biennial in Lausanne and Warsaw; and the Sculpture in Fiber show at the Museum of Contemporary crafts in New York; the Los Angeles County Museum; the Fairtree Gallery, New York; the University of Wisconsin; and the University of New Mexico.
